President Biden met virtually with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday. The video conference lasted over three hours and covered several topics, including the status of Taiwan – the island nation that China considers part of its territory. China has recently been increasing its military presence around the island in response to a recent U.S. delegation arriving there.
During the start of his remarks to President Xi, the president stated, “As I’ve said before, it seems to me our responsibility as leaders of China and the United States is to ensure that the competition between our countries does not veer into conflict, whether intended or unintended.” A White House statement clarified the administration’s position on Taiwan saying the U.S. “strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
